The Shining + Doctor Sleep (Blu-ray)

Hello everyone! Apologies for the vanishing act, it’s been a busy few days with the Super Bowl and some personal matters. That said, you all knew it was coming! When I arrived home from work today, my brand new 4K edition of Doctor Sleep, the sequel to the Stanley Kubrick all time horror classic, The Shining was waiting for me. Much like with Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to one of, if not my all time favorite films, my reaction to the announcement of this film was mixed. On the one hand, any sequel to a classic, particularly so many decades after release, is always a dicey, even disastrous proposition. On the other, news that it was being masterminded by none other than Mike Flannigan, one of my favorite working filmmakers, filled me to the brim with confidence. I’m beyond psyched to report that my confidence paid off. This movie was an absolute masterpiece, and a worthy follow up to the original. Of course it doesn’t reach its predecessors lofty heights, but this film just hits ALL of the right notes on all fronts for me. Amazing performances, ominous, all consuming atmospheric dread, sleek, gorgeous cinematography, and oh the lore! The lore was just epic. The nostalgia, callbacks, genuinely interesting characters... I simply loved this film across the board. What about all of you? How did you like Doctor Sleep?
