The Host (Blu-ray)

Hey all! I hope everyone is taking it easy and having a solid week so far. It was a seriously early work shift, and I have the rest of the entire day to sit around and watch a film or three. First up we have the 2006 Korean monster movie The Host. I saw this one after watching Mother and Snowpiercer for the first time, and was ravenous for any and all things Bong Joon-ho. Snowpiercer is one of my favorite films, and I was immediately excited to see what he could do with the monster movie genre. And, as always, he delivered and then some. What I really noticed and loved upon just rewatching this, is how absolutely specific and unique his sense for unusual and strange character/family dynamics was already at this stage in his career. I could see elements of Parasite all over the film way back in the mid 2000’s. Super fun. The monster was nasty, the “action” limited yet effective, really there isn’t a single thing about The Host I did not adore. I can’t wait to see whatever Joon-ho comes up with, but if I’m being honest, I really hope it’s another genre offering. He really does have a unique voice that lends itself to fantastic situations.
