Oh yes!!! You all knew it was coming. Another Scream Factory collectors edition has arrived to take its rightful place in the vault, this time in the form of the John Carpenter sci-fi action blockbuster, Escape From LA. The notorious big budget sequel to his earlier cult classic Escape From New York, this film has had a complicated reception from day one. In essence a jazzed up, shinier, dumber, less atmospheric Saturday morning cartoon remake of the original, this is consistently seen as the far inferior of the two, and with some good reason. It definitely lacks the same kind of atmospheric, gritty vibe of the first film, and essentially repeats a lot of the same beats. That said, when taken in its own context and freed from the shadow of its better, older sibling, there is so much fun to be had here. The added production values change the feel, but add so much in scale and outrageous over the top mania to the proceedings, making the film very much its own thing. It feels a little like the transition from Robocop 2 to 3, but without the total neutering of its protagonist. Bigger, cheesier, more outlandish, but essentially more of the same. I love the film, and surprisingly have a lot more nostalgia for Escape from LA than New York, despite recognizing the quality gap between the two. The original will always be a classic, but I think LA will continue to gain fans and change opinions as time goes on. There’s a hell of a lot to love. I can’t wait to see the new 4K scan and dig into some of the new supplements! How about all of you? Any fans of the adventures of Snake Plissken??? Which film is your favorite?
