Shivers (Blu-ray)

“BEING TERRIFIED IS JUST THE BEGINNING!” All right, moving on from Michael Myers for just a quick spell, here we have the recent Vestron Video Collector’s Series release of David Cronenberg’s feature debut, Shivers. Of course, like many of you in here I’m a lifelong fan of the master of body horror, and count films like Videodrome and The Fly among my all time favorites. His thrillers/period/dramas are nearly as good as his horror output as well, with A History of Violence and Eastern Promises being the cream of the crop. That said, there are several of his earlier works I’ve yet to see, or in the case of Shivers, had been long enough where it may as well have been a first time watch. This one was just fantastic. It’s got that special, sterile 70’s horror feel, with a meticulous, slow build of tension that eventually explodes into violent, sexual, rabid mayhem. I can’t praise this one enough, particularly for a debut. It’s got a sense of a filmmaker experimenting with his now iconic traits, and everything came together amazingly. Not to mention that phenomenally nihilistic 70’s ending. God I love those endings 😂😎🤘How did you all like Shivers?
