Hey all! It’s been a quiet weekend over here at the vault, with rest, relaxation, and movies being the only thing on the agenda. As some of you may know, California is currently in the midst of a historic heat wave, and fires continue to burn, blanketing our state in smoke and ash. Let’s just say it’s been a little bit of an anxious time, and for there’s no better way to deal with anxiety than a good old fashioned director spotlight. Submitted for your approval, today we have the one and only Brett Leonard. He began his directorial career with the institution set undead horror film Dead Pit, which I’ve never seen but just picked up, and am excited to give a spin. Most may be familiar with his pair of cyber thrillers from the early 90’s, The Lawnmower Man, and Virtuosity. He’s worked relatively infrequently since, popping up to direct the TV film Man-Thing, as well as the body horror/thriller Feed. Unfortunately his career essentially flatlined after directing the critically eviscerated final entry in the iconic franchise, Highlander: The Source. I’ve always enjoyed his unique and fantastical obsession with the divide and bridges between technology and humanity, and although he has never crafted a flat out masterpiece, these films are all highly underrated. Much like another eccentric yet unique filmmaker Richard Stanley, I’d love to see a triumphant return of Leonard with the support and talent to bring another of his unique visions to life. In the meantime, this will be the debut showing of Dead Pit over here at the vault, so let’s see how the fledgling filmmaker cut his teeth for the first time. Any other fans?
