Minted from 1892 to 1916, the Barber design was actually the winner of a competition held by Mint Director Edward Leech. The winning design was done by Charles Barber. After winning the competition, he was later commissioned by Leech to design the quarter and half dollar. The designs were approved by President Benjamin Harrison in November of 1891 and striking the coins began the following January.
