Nintendo Paper Model "The House with a Veranda"

Let’s have a look at one of Nintendo’s Paper Models, the House with a Veranda, which for the purposes of this post shall be known as Casa de Bowser. Casa de Bowser came to market in Japan in 1974 along with several other Paper Models in 4 categories. Those categories were Animals, Buildings, Vehicles, and Large sets. Each category is color coded and features many different paper craft items you can build. The difficulty of these paper models varies widely from category to category and kit to kit. It took me a few hours a day for a whole week to cut, fold, and assemble Casa de Bowser. The finished house, however, makes all the work worth it. It offers layers of depth and dimension in an asymmetrical structure and the veranda offers a great chill spot for old Bowser. Sometimes, he needs to get away from his castle and unwind from all his kidnappings! The Paper Model collection represents a step in Nintendo’s history in which it leaps into the toy market with a renewed look at their assets on hand. Having printing presses to produce playing cards, the Paper Models were relatively easy for Nintendo to turn out and enjoy large profits. Therefore, the Paper Models are one of the earliest forms of Gunpei Yokoi’s “Lateral thinking with withered technology.” Nintendo simply made new and innovative use of their existing technology. This philosophy is central to how Nintendo functions and remains successful. The Paper Models were not Nintendo’s first foray into paper goods, nor would it be their last, as their tried and true philosophy brought us their successor.
