Sho flyttar in i sin morbrors hus och upptäcker snart de små människorna, Borrowers, som bor där. En 14-årig Borrower vid namn Arrietty anstränger sig för att visa sig värdig genom att hjälpa sin far samla material som familjen behöver från Sho:s nya hem. However, Arrietty and Sho meet, breaking the rule that humans must not know about the Borrowers' existence. As Sho and Arrietty's relationship develops, human interference endangers the Borrowers' lives. Arrietty and Sho work together to try and protect the Borrowers' way of life.
