I just noticed that itβs been exactly a year to the day since the last time I did a Blade Runner double feature!!! Given that the original has been my all time favorite film (frequently duking it out for that position with 2001: A Space Odyssey, another seminal sci-fi epic you may have heard of) for the majority of my adult life, I make it a point to watch the original at least once a year. I had seen it countless times growing up in a wide variety of mediums, but it was when I picked up my own VHS copy that I began to discover just how special the film really was. Iβve owned it on every format since, and am always freshly excited to revisit these beautiful, perfect films. The fact that Blade Runner 2049 exists at all is a bit of a shock, and an absolute pleasure as it truly is a film that embodies the concept of high risk, high reward. They risked A LOT making this one. I remember when it was first announced I rolled my eyes, and assumed the worst. The fact that in retrospect, 2049 actually elevates the original, and is in its own right a comparable masterpiece, is still mind boggling to me. They pretty much exist as companions, permanently intertwined as one story in my mind. These are truly the definition of classics, and I know they will only continue to get better with time ππ₯π€
