The DM has control over kings, dragons, goblins, necromancers, innkeepers, guards and basically every other living creature in the world. That should be enough to keep things in line. But the players have other plans. The DM introduces a random NPC with one line of dialogue. The party immediately decides that that person is the most important NPC in the entire campaign. Now he needs a name. A family. A backstory. Maybe he should come along on adventures. And the DM sits behind the screen and improvises his life from childhood to retirement plan. Puppet Master AKA The DM T-shirt is for the person who allegedly controls the whole world. Until the players decide to adopt a goblin, open an inn, or ignore the quest that took three hours to prepare.
