Wow! I cannot say enough good things about this little known, little seen dark historic epic, The First King. I don’t even recall where I first heard about this one, but the promise of a brutal, dark, realistic telling of the myth of Romulus and Remus, the brothers and historical “founders” of Rome, was too much to resist. I was treated to an absolutely beautiful, vicious, all around superb historic indie experience. Make no mistake about it, this is no Braveheart, but it doesn’t need to be. If anyone has seen another recent small scale, high quality historic thriller, Pilgrimage, this one barks up a similar tree. The performances are outstanding, the story brisk and rewarding, with a few small instances of absolutely savage gore. Do NOT come in expecting a total wall to wall bloodbath. You will be disappointed. This is one the best under the radar films of its type in recent years, and I highly suggest seeking it out! Anyone else watched The First King?
