Brick (Blu-ray)

Alright, it’s finally time to dig into the first film in my much delayed Rian Johnson filmography marathon! After taking an unexpectedly long and still ongoing detour into 90’s horror land, I thought it way past time to give his feature film debut Brick the time of day. I’m glad I did! I rented this one from Blockbuster once not long after it came out, and remember really enjoying it. Upon rewatch, it’s still just as solid as I recall, with bitingly clever dialogue, a sharp as brass tacks story, slick and intriguing performances, really the works. Although the film is clearly working on a smaller budget than recent Johnson outings, there is a sophisticated, experienced feel to the proceedings that is unusual for a first time feature film maker. Having a burgeoning talent like Joseph Gordon Levitt leading the charge certainly helped, but it is clear from the get go that Johnson was a special talent. Fantastic debut from a fantastic filmmaker. What did you all think of Brick?
