Armageddon + Deep Impact (Blu-ray)

Item image

And next up on today’s episode of my new series featuring similar movies duking it out in epic, no holds barred, high flying ladder death matches of furious destruction and despair, all in desperate bids to see... what movie about an almost decimated earth with world ending celestial objects did it better? First up, we have Arma-don’twannamissathing-geddon, starring an ensemble cast of some of Hollywood’s most iconic character actors, overseen by the inimitable talents of Bruce “kindofstillgaveashit” Willis and Ben “definitely not Batman” Affleck. Loud, action packed, emotionally manipulative, at times downright silly and oh so 90’s, this is pretty much Michael Bay at the apex of Bayness. Next we’ve got Deep Impact, billed as the thinking man’s answer to Armageddon, more interested in fleshing out characters and building world ending tension, than fireworks and flash bangs galore. Elijah Wood is excellent in this relatively early experience with blockbuster film, and it’s always great to see Leelee Sobieski in anything. I carried a torch for her for years! 😂😍🤘 If I had to desert island, gun to my head choose between them, I’d go with Armageddon, mostly because I saw it in theaters several times with friends and it’s got an overall popcorn feel that is kind of perfect and endlessly nostalgic. Deep Impact is also very good, even a better film viewed objectively, but in a much different context. It doesn’t have quite the replay value, but it’s well worth owning for a more emotionally nuanced, even realistic scenario compared to its rival. How about all of you? What’s your favorite of the two (or another???) Why? Let’s chat!
