The Shining (Blu-ray + 4K UHD)

Hey all!!! I hope everyone is having a killer Saturday. I just finished up a fun little horror anthology called Ghost Stories on Hulu, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Next up, it’s time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, a seminal horror classic one or two of you may have heard of? Naturally I had to go with the 4K editions of both The Shining AND it’s surprisingly superb sequel, Doctor Sleep. We all know the original is an indisputable classic, and I could go on and on and on about its merits and my life long love and obsession with the film. What I also love is that decades later, the film inspired the creation of a much belated sequel in the firm of Doctor Sleep. Much like with Blade Runner 2049, is a sequel to one of, if not my all time favorite films, and the fact that it was masterminded by none other than modern horror darling Mike Flannigan, resulted in it also turning out to be a fantastic film in its own right, and a more than worthy follow up to the original. Of course it doesn’t reach its predecessors lofty heights, but it hits ALL of the right notes on all fronts for me. Amazing performances, ominous, all consuming atmospheric dread, sleek, gorgeous cinematography, and oh the lore! The lore was just epic. The nostalgia, callbacks, genuinely interesting characters... I simply loved this film across the board. What about all of you? How did you like The Shining? Doctor Sleep? Let’s chat!
