Okay, moving right along, here we have the one off, Michael Myers free black sheep experiment of the Halloween franchise, the supernatural horror thriller Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Obviously, we all know this films status as a major outlier, as it was intended by John Carpenter and Debra Hill to be the first of a new direction for the franchise as an anthology horror series. With its relative failure, both critically and financially, these plans were abandoned and our favorite supernatural (?) serial murderer was brought back a handful of years later. For me, I think that’s a bit of a tragedy, as this is far and away my favorite film in the series. Tom Atkins is obviously a big part of why I love this one so much, and he carries the film on his capable, sleuthing shoulders the way no one else could. I love the palpable darkness as well one. The Halloween series is legendary for its atmosphere and tension, but it’s never been the most sinister of the main horror franchises. I felt that Halloween III exudes a kind of atmospheric dread none of the other entries do. It’s also by far one of the best paced. I never feel one moment of drag, as I do during the the first two.
