All right, now it’s time to move into yet another Halloween continuity, this time focusing on the one two punch of Rob Zombie’s unique take on the classic franchise. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a huge fan of Zombie and his particular cinematic sensibilities. I’ve never really enjoyed his 1000 Corpses films (or whatever they are called), and while I definitely grew up listening to White Zombie and some of his solo material, I’ve also never called myself a diehard fan of his music. All of that said, given that I don’t hold any particular holy relevance to the previous Halloween films, I can accept his vision of an origin story for the evil that is a Michael Myers. This movie was decent. It had a solid pace, a menacing Michael Myers, and while the atmosphere was more outright ominous and brutal, it was an atmospheric film unique to Zombie’s sensibilities. I like what he tried to do, even if the film still lands with a relative shrug for me, and does little beyond demystifying the senseless, shapeless, ambiguous nature of Myers’s evil. It doesn’t exactly fail, but it certainly doesn’t entirely work. An okay film, but hardly the triumphant reworking of the franchise I could have hoped for. What about all of you? With as divisive as these films are, I’m interested in hearing all of your takes!
