Hey all! Time for another revisit to the cold and lonely darkness that is the decaying neo noir world of Angel Heart. There are just some films that have that special something that draws you in time after time, and Angel Heart is one of those through and through. I think part of its is the atmosphere. There’s a consistent, omnipresent feeling of dread, decay, and ever approaching doom. Mickey Rourke is in top form here, eclipsed only by his career best in Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. Robert Deniro hardly deserves top billing, but he plays an essential and iconic role here, bringing a sleek sense of style and menace to every scene he chews up and spits back out. The intangible sense of oppression feels almost otherworldly at times, and when I feel like getting away, this is one of the most frequent destinations I like to visit. I’d love to see a super deluxe Arrow Video or Shout Factory release of this underrated, under seen classic. Any fans?
