Mario w/ Mushroom Applause Figurine

Here is Mario W/ Mushroom. This one is really cool as it is modeled after iconic art that depicts Mario holding a yellow mushroom. No clue where this mushroom fit into Mario’s world in 1989. Anybody know, please fill me in!
