Let’s look at legendary Pokémon Rayquaza and how it’s influenced by Mexican culture. While not immediately evident it has been theorized that this monster is heavily inspired by the Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl. Quetzalcoatl resembles a dragon-like serpent with plumage in place of scales. It is a highly documented entity with many historic records that cement its clear visual representation. Rayquaza on the other hand is more like a flying snake with a set of arms and smooth body without scales. So in what ways do we draw similarities? Other than the same body types, the two have quite a bit in common. They are both green serpentine creatures that can fly without wings. Furthermore historical documents show yellow and red markings on Quetzalcoatl which are also present in Rayquaza. The last detail lies on the similar characteristics of their tails. They both have a flat fan-shaped tail. While some may find these similarities to be subjective. I think the small details cross the line between coincidence and intention. That intention making it clear that Rayquaza is influenced by Quetzalcoatl. What are your thoughts?
