When young schoolteacher Eva (Astrid Villaume) arrives in Greenland to surprise her fiancé (Bjørn Watt Boolsen), she finds him in the arms of another woman. Hurt and unhappy, she seeks refuge with the outpost manager Jens Lauritzen (Poul Reichhardt) in the small, idyllic hunter-guild Sermilik. On the surface Lauritzen seems misanthropic and aggressive. But soon Eva discovers that she does not carry the village's only broken heart... Erik Balling's Qivitoq (The Fjeldgården) is a grand journey into a fantastic Greenlandic natural landscapes and not least a fascinating mythical world where men go to the mountains when they are humiliated in the hunter-folk community. The film was, as the first Danish film ever, nominated for an Oscar after its release in 1956. Since then only a few have seen Poul Reichhardt again as the outpost manager Jens Lauritzen and not least the film's spectacular set design on the world's largest island. For although Qivitoq has been among Nordisk Films' most sought-after classics, it has never been released on VHS or DVD... until now.
