NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the American civilian space agency, was founded in July 1958, but in the 1950s most Americans took for granted that the Soviet Union was technologically far superior to the USA. It came as a collective shock when the Soviet Union already in October 1957 sent the first Sputnik up, and later in 1961 the Americans briefly got ahead by a month when they launched cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin as the first human in space, and not least brought him back safely. Here, researchers and many of the first astronauts tell of the pioneers' triumphs and tragedies, which ended with everyone, including the scientists, realizing that a living human being was one of the most important components for a successful space mission.
