The pilot is the devil-may-care Frank Towns (Dennis Quaid), who fears neither God nor man, but who is very uneasy about crashing. The plane is caught in a fierce sandstorm and forced to make an emergency landing in the desert. The survivors now face the merciless aridity with no water or provisions. They can choose to die of thirst or hunger, become victims of the desert's murderous nomads, or attempt to collaborate to build a usable, smaller plane from the wreckage of the crashed aircraft.
