The film is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, and the screenplay is written by Bernd Eichinger (Rosens navn and Åndernes hus) based on the famous historian Joachim Fest's book Ragnarok. Hitler and the Third Reich's downfall and Hitler's personal secretary Traudl Junge's accounts. "Der Untergang" depicts the final weeks of Adolf Hitler's (Bruno Ganz) life, seen through the eyes of stenographer Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara). Germany is dissolving and a defeat for the Third Reich seems unavoidable. Hitler, together with his closest circle, including his wife Eva Braun (Juliane Köhler) and the Goebbels family (Ulrich Matthes and Corinna Harfouch), have secluded themselves in the Führerbunker in central Berlin, where they await their fate. The Allies approach Berlin's gates rapidly, and Hitler's changing moods grow worse and worse as the war progresses. A picture quickly forms of a disillusioned Hitler with extreme paranoia of conspiracies and a violent hatred of Jews, yet there is also presented an as yet unknown Hitler with more humane sides.
