It was produced by the three people who came to shape Saga's golden-age productions through the 1950s: Annelise Reenberg, John Olsen and Poul Bang! - And the film became the absolute evergreen of Danish golden-age cinema. Alone in the premiere cinema it ran from 6/12-1951 to 20/4-1952. Then it moved out to the peripheral and provincial cinemas, where it was finally taken off the posters in spring 1953! Never before or since has a Christmas film drawn full houses on a Danish summer evening, but Fra den gamle Købmandsgård did - in the summer of 1952. The Christmas sequence in the film is the heartwarming finale, and it contains everything you know from the old Danish Christmas tale. So beautiful and well told, that parents and grandparents - with the joy of reunion - faithfully trudge to the cinema with the kids every Christmas - for 40 years! - to Jul i Købmandsgården. For generations the film has changed its title every December. Generations have cheered a black-and-white film from 1951 - why? The film's director, Annelise Reenberg, gave part of the answer a few years after the premiere. She said: "Try replacing the title with: Jul i det nye supermarked".
