What changed, and why collectors are paying attention
For years, the choice was binary: original hardware or software emulation. FPGA isn't magic, and the community can be a little evangelical about it. Analogue units sell in limited drops and vanish fast, so scalper markups on the Pocket in particular have been ugly. MiSTer, meanwhile, rewards tinkerers – you're assembling a board, add-ons, and SD cards, not opening a sleek retail box. Neither is the "just works" experience of an original console hooked to a CRT, if that's the aesthetic you're chasing.
And there's a philosophical split worth naming. Purists still argue that nothing beats original hardware on a period-correct display, scanlines and all. They're not wrong that a real Trinitron does something no upscaler fully replicates. But for the growing crowd that plays more than it displays, FPGA has become the sensible default.
Where this goes next
Expect the cart-and-disc market to stay bifurcated. Sealed and graded copies will keep climbing as pure collectibles, largely untouched by how people actually play. Loose, ex-rental, and CIB copies stay useful precisely because FPGA hardware gives them somewhere to run.
