Mattel was founded in a Los Angeles garage in 1945 and changed the toy business twice: with Barbie in 1959, and with Masters of the Universe in 1982, which pioneered the idea of building a cartoon around a toy line rather than the other way round.
Both still drive the secondary market. Boxed Barbie collector editions and loose vintage He-Man figures sit at opposite ends of the same catalogue, and both turn up here.
