And when he, in a drunken stupor, collapses in the field, the passing baron is tempted to play a trick on Jeppe. The baron’s lackeys carry the sleeping Jeppe up to the castle, dress him in the baron’s finest nightwear, and place him in the baron’s bed. When Jeppe wakes, he thinks he is dead and has flown to heaven. But gradually the baron’s persistent lackeys manage to convince him that he actually is the baron himself. And Jeppe soon exploits this to take revenge on old enemies and indulge in old vices. In 1990, director Kasper Rostrup’s Dansen med Regitze was nominated for an Oscar. Nine years earlier, Rostrup had his directorial debut with this noble film adaptation of Ludvig Holberg’s classic play about Jeppe on the Hill. It was produced in 1981 to celebrate Nordisk Film’s 75th anniversary. And now it is coming on DVD in 2006 — Nordisk Film’s 100th anniversary year.
