The book first appeared in Germany in 1959 and was met with scandal and anger, because it was regarded as an insult to German women. In 2004 the book was republished and once again sparked a heated debate, but this time the polemic concerned who might be behind the hidden identity "Anonyma," and whether the book could be considered a valuable source to a hitherto unknown chapter of World War II. The person behind "Anonyma" has, however, never been revealed, and the author is believed to have wished it so, since her survival strategy involved catering to the lusts of Russian officers.
