She has lost her parents and lives with her English uncle, Mr. Touchett. One day she receives a remarkably advantageous marriage proposal from Lord Warburton, but to everyone's consternation she declines. She is not ready to bind herself and would rather travel and "experience the world" first. The uncle dies shortly after, and she inherits a fortune, so the dream comes true. Isabel travels to Europe in search of happiness and freedom. Along the way she is introduced to the charming but deceitful Gilbert, who is only after her money.
